Since grizzly bears living south of the Canadian/U. S. border were listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1975 as a threatened species, their numbers have expanded. In 1975 there were 136 grizzlies in the 14 million acres known as the Greater Yellowstone Area (GYA), that includes Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, plus surrounding National Forest lands and neighboring private land and ranches. The most recent grizzly count in 2010 generated 602 bears. Wolf numbers have observed similar expansions, with no breeding wolf pairs known to inhabit Yellowstone in the 1990s to 98 wolves in 10 packs in Yellowstone by 2011.
